Disney's Animal Kingdom is the newest of the four Disney theme parks and is also the largest at 500 acres of fun! Most visitors will have the opportunity to spend one day at Animal Kingdom during their stay and that is usually enough time to see and do most of the popular attractions. However, if you get the opportunity to spend some extra time there, I would recommend searching out Africa a bit more in depth. I had the chance to do this recently and had such a great time. I found an old camcorder that I gave to my son and he thought it would be fun to visit Animal Kingdom and do some filming during the safari.
Kilimanjaro Safari's is a 20 minute ride that explores the natural habitats of animals such as rhinos, giraffes, elephants, crocodiles, lions, and much, much more. The animals appear to be free roaming but that's just part of the Disney magic! While riding in an open air vehicle, your knowledgeable guide takes you on a somewhat bumpy ride through trails of mud and swamp to view the animals and the foliage that are unique to different regions of Africa.
The newest addition to Africa is the Harambe Marketplace. This is a fast food paradise made up of four different walk up windows. There is Kitamu Grill for skewered chicken and kebab flatbread sandwiches, Chef Mwanga's for ribs, Famous Sausages which serves corndogs made with South African sausage, and Wanjohi Refreshments serving beer, wine and other non-alcoholic beverages. There's an eating area large enough to hold about 220 people and all of the art and props came directly from Africa. What a great place to relax under an umbrella and enjoy a craft beer!
The last stop on our African adventure was the Harambe Theatre to see Festival of the Lion King. It's no wonder this is voted "Best Show at Disney World" time and time again. It's a spectacular celebration of Simba and you'll be wowed by the singing, dancing, costumes, comedy and acrobatics that make this Broadway style show a highlight of your trip! No matter how many times I see this show, I still get very emotional (yes, I cry) and enjoy it as if it were my first time there. There will be crowds but there are several show times throughout the day. Check your park map and make sure to arrive early for the best seating.
How great is it? On a scale of 1 to 10: This experience is a 10!
