The medieval experience starts as you cross the mote into the castle. Doors open at 5:45 and there are many activities going on before you're admitted into the seating area. There's a couple of bars, a large gift shop, an area to take photos and a special room where (for an extra charge) you too can be knighted in front of a cheering crowd.
Seating begins at about 7:00 and you enter according to the color of crown that was provided on entry. My family had red crows so we sat in the red section and cheered on the red knight. I bought my son a red flag to wave ($5) throughout the tournament (it ended up hitting me in the head more than anything). As we sat down, our server greeted us and offered a pre-tournament presentation to provide information to ensure a good experience. Guests sit side by side at long tables and you need to really like your neighbor because it is a tight fit. Drinks are served followed by each course of the meal. Eating with our hands was a treat for my son and it added to the 11th century feel of the night. We drank delicious soup from pewter bowls and had roast chicken better than mom makes (sorry mom). For dessert, the apple pastry was out of this world and our only wish was there might be left overs that we could claim!
The entertainment commences immediately and the entire show lasts for about 90 minutes. There's jousting, games of skill, a maiden with her trained hawk and of course, 6 knights entering into fierce combat hoping to seek the title of champion! There are cheers and boos and horses and hero's and it's everything you could hope for but nothing you would expect.
